" the word ‘self’ encompasses so much: my personality, soul, flesh, my grades in school, extracurricular activities, my family, and my friends. ‘self’ is not a simple concept but is defined by love. on the path to discovering my ‘self,’ i am deeply in love—with life, with faith, with hope. to me, this is both a question and an answer."

-- j.l

" self is the act of completely being yourself with no desire or need to hide any part of yourself. self is feeling at home with where you are at in life, but also with who you are at your core. self is understanding that the person you are right now is who you are and that you should slow down and just be with yourself for some time. it is realizing that you won’t ever be this age, this grade, with these people or in this place ever again. it’s learning to love the moment and who you are in each part of this life."

-- m.h

" ‘self’ is the characteristics that define who we are and make us unique. it isn’t fixed; rather, it evolves. as we go through life and encounter new experiences, we grow and, in the same way as a tree, we develop new branches and roots, continuously reshaping our identity."

-- a.a

" my perception of ‘self’ is a series of experiences, emotions, and memories. these factors of life constantly evolve as we grow, contributing to how we identify. considering that ‘self’ is not a fixed disposition, but something that shifts and adapts as life moves on. this helps us grieve to eventually heal, and connect with others. in my piece, i explore the idea of ‘self’ as what is shown to society and what is carried beyond our physical scars. art enables me to express my own sense of ‘self’ while also recognizing each person’s individual complexity. "

" to me, self is everything people don’t always see. it’s not just who you are when you’re smiling or succeeding, it is the parts of you that struggle, doubt, and fight to stay true in a world constantly telling you who to be. self means holding onto your identity, even when it feels like that control is slipping. it is the quiet parts of my story that have shaped me, the pain i carry, and the strength i have gained from it. understanding my 'self' meant confronting things like mental health, pressure, and powerlessness, and turning those feelings into something that speaks louder than words. "

-- c.f

" to me, self is something i am scared of, something i’m afraid to think too deeply about. it hides the darkest fears and untold stories buried deep inside us. our inner world isn’t something concrete, but it’s not totally abstract either—it’s this blurry, in-between space, almost like a metaphor for who we are. the self shapes everything we do, the habits we form, and how we live our lives. that’s why i want to use a surrealist style to express my inner self and bring those feelings to life. "

FEATURED PAST THEME: CHAOS

Our 2024 Creatives pushed their artistic boundaries in the pursuit to exemplify CHAOS. Students explored the way CHAOS is inevitable — through the mundane or the extraordinary, whether embraced or challenged. We’re honoured to have the opportunity to support our fellow Creatives and wish the graduating classes of 2024 endless inspiration in their pursuits!
